Paul Skenes MLB Debut Patch Autograph Sells For $1.11 Million
Paul Skenes’ 1/1 Rookie Debut Patch Autograph sold for $1.11 million in an auction with Fanatics Collect. Dick’s Sporting Goods was the winning bidder, and they intend to put it on display in a Pittsburgh-area store.
Topps introduced the Rookie Debut Patch Autograph cards in 2023 and they immediately became a hit. All players making their big league will have a “MLB Debut” patch sewed onto their jersey. Topps then takes that patch, puts it in a card, and gets the player to sign it. The cards are then randomly inserted into a Topps Update Series pack. After his award-winning rookie season, Skenes’ card became one of the most talked of the year.
Prior to the set’s release, the Pittsburgh Pirates put out an offer to the lucky collector who would wind up pulling the card: 30 years old Pirates season tickets behind home plate, a softball game at PNC Park, a meet-and-greet with Skenes, autographed memorabilia, and more. The catch? The collector would have to trade the Pirates the card for all of the above.
An 11-year-old collector from California wound up finding the card in a pack he opened on Christmas morning. He turned down the Pirates offer, instead deciding to put the card up for auction. Now that it sold for over a million dollars, it seems like he made the right decision.
